PhD in Environmental and Energy Engineering Sciences

Petra Malisan has just finished his thesis for his PhD in Environmental and Energy Engineering Sciences within the SPRINT-Lab of Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture. The thesis focuses on the characterization of elementary scenarios for multi-hazard safety assessments of learning facilities.

SPRINT and UNESCO are testing VISUS methodology in Haiti

Since 23th February to 3rd March, professor Stefano Grimaz is in Haiti for the application of the VISUS methodology for the safety assessment of haitian schools (link).

A team of experts from SPRINT, UNESCO and local universities held the training activities and conducted several inspections of school complexes.
This pilot project (as the previous in Peru, Indonesia, LaoDPR and El Salvador) aims at training engineering and architecture students, and local technicians to the multi-hazard survey for VISUS.

STCS Scientific Unit activity continues also during the weekends

During the seismic emergency, the activity of the STCS Scientific Unit does not stop... and continues also during the weekends. The back-office of the STCS is managed by the SPRINT-lab researchers and it is composed also by expert firefighters and technicians. Several students have also supported the operations.


Professor Stefano Grimaz, the director of the SPRINT-lab, is in the areas affected by the earthquake, supporting the emergency management, as scientific director of the STCS Scientific Unit.

VISUS in Peru


The VISUS methodology was succesfully tested in Peru from 29th August to 3rd SeptemberProfessor Stefano Grimaz and a team of experts from SPRINT, UNESCO and local universities held the training activities and conducted several inspections of school complexes.



This pilot project aims at training engineering and architecture students, and local technicians to the multi-hazard VISUS survey of school complexes in Peru.

SPRINT-Lab: STCS Scientific Unit

The Scientific Unit set up at the SPRINT laboratory of the University of Udine is continuing the data processing and mapping activities.

The group work in composed by the SPRINT team, expert firefighters and technicians.



Every day several students are involved in the activities. The students deal with the issues faced during their course of study and provide help in data entry operations.

Central Italy Earthquake 2016 - SCIENTIFIC UNIT: work in progress

Works in progress at the Scientific Unit set up at the SPRINT laboratory of the University of Udine.

The SPRINT team is supported by expert firefighters from Udine and Gorizia.

Volunteer students are involved in the operations. The students provide help in data entry operations and, in this way, they also deal with the issues faced during their course of study.

Central Italy Earthquake 2016 - SCIENTIFIC UNIT

The Scientific Unit of the STCS (Short-term Countermeasures System, Italian National Fire Service) was set-up at the SPRINT-Lab of the University of Udine (Italy).

The Scientific Unit processes the data for STCS personnel, elaborating a safety triage assessment of the buildings damaged by the earthquake of the 24th August in Central Italy.

International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Mitigation - Special session on School Safety

The Director of SPRINT-Lab Prof. Stefano Grimaz presented the VISUS methodology (developed in collaboration with UNESCO) at the International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Mitigation - Special session on School Safety.

EU ModEX practice


The SPRINT-Lab director, prof. Stefano Grimaz participated as a trainer in the exercise of the European Civil Protection "EU Module Exercise". The purpose of the exercise was to test the capacity of intervention of the European Mechanism for Civil Protection in case of emergencies occurring inside or outside the territory of the European Union.
The exercise took place from 8 to 11 June 2016 in the rubble fields of "Tritolwerk", a former dynamite factory currently military base in Lower Austria.
